How CricZone uses AI

Readers are entitled to know when a machine had a hand in what they are reading or looking at. This page says where AI is involved at CricZone and where it is not, and it is written to be checkable rather than reassuring.

The journalism is written by people

Articles, match reports, analysis and interviews on CricZone are written by people. Every piece carries its writer's name, and the newsroom's own record additionally holds who approved and published it.

CricZone does not publish machine-written articles. If that ever changes, the piece will say so on the piece itself, and this page will say so here.

Scores and statistics are data, not generated text

Scores, fixtures, squads, scorecards and player records come from cricket data suppliers and are displayed as they are received. No language model writes them, summarises them or fills in a gap in them.

Where a score may be out of date, the page says so rather than smoothing over it.

Photographs and images

Every picture in the CricZone library carries a provenance record, and it is something a person declares rather than something the software guesses. There is no reliable way to look at an image file and know whether a model made it, so nothing here is detected.

That record has four possible answers: nobody has said yet, a photograph with no generative step, a photograph a model has altered or upscaled, or an image generated by a model.

No image on CricZone today is declared as generated by a model, and none carries an AI disclosure. Where one does, the page it appears on will say so under the picture.

Descriptions for screen readers

Some photographs in the imported archive carry alternative text composed by a rule from the subject's name, so that a screen reader announces who is in the picture rather than reading out a file name. That is a rule, not a model, and it does not describe the picture beyond naming its subject.

Reference pages for teams and players

The short descriptions on team and player pages were written from named published sources, and those sources are listed with the description so you can check them. They deliberately carry no career statistics, because a statistic set in prose is wrong the next time the player bats.

What we do not use AI for

• Deciding what to publish, or what to put on the front page.
• Writing or editing a correction.
• Moderating comments automatically.
• Generating a score, a scorecard or a statistic.
• Creating a photograph of a real person, a real match or a real moment.
• Answering an enquiry you send us. A person reads it and a person replies.

If we get this wrong

If you think something on CricZone was machine-made and not disclosed, tell us through the contact form and choose Corrections. We will look at it and answer in writing, and if we were wrong we will publish a correction on the piece.
