David Hemp appointed Bangladesh Women head coach ahead of Australia tour

Dhaka, September 30: David Hemp has been appointed head coach of the Bangladesh Women’s national team on a two-year deal, with the former Bermuda international set to begin his tenure during next month’s ODI tour of Australia.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Wednesday that Hemp, 55, will join the squad in Brisbane, with his contract running until September 2028. He replaces Sarwar Imran, who had been in charge of the national women’s side since February 2025.

Hemp is already familiar with Bangladesh’s women’s setup, having worked as batting coach during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup Qualifier in Pakistan in 2025 and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in Nepal earlier this year.

His appointment also continues a long association with the BCB. Hemp joined the board in May 2023 as head coach of its High Performance programme before later working with the Bangladesh men’s team, including as batting coach from 2024.

He brings considerable experience in women’s cricket, having previously coached Pakistan Women from 2020 to 2022 and also held coaching roles with Victoria Women and Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League.

Hemp’s first assignment comes against one of the strongest sides in the international game, with Bangladesh set to play three ODIs against Australia at Allan Border Field in Brisbane on October 9, 11 and 14.

Bangladesh also named their 16-player squad for the tour on Wednesday, with Nigar Sultana Joty retaining the ODI captaincy and Nahida Akter named vice-captain.

Uncapped pacers Disha Biswas and Habiba Islam Pinky were included, while Sanjida Akter Meghla, Dilara Akter and Murshida Khatun returned to the ODI squad.

Bangladesh are scheduled to depart for Australia on October 3 and will play a warm-up match against Queensland on October 6 before the three-match series begins.
