Sydney, 20 October 2026: Ashleigh Gardner delivered a match-winning all-round performance as Australia Women defeated New Zealand Women by 40 runs in the second T20I at North Sydney Oval, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Gardner smashed 84 off just 45 deliveries before returning figures of 2/17, while Georgia Wareham claimed three wickets to restrict New Zealand to 127/8 in pursuit of Australia's 167/7.

After New Zealand captain Melie Kerr elected to field, Australia struggled early, slipping to 41/3 inside seven overs.

Georgia Voll departed for a duck, while Phoebe Litchfield (7) and Ellyse Perry (11) failed to make significant contributions.

However, Gardner shifted the momentum with an aggressive counterattack, combining with Beth Mooney (39 off 28) to add 60 runs for the fourth wicket.

The right-hander reached her half-century from just 29 balls and continued attacking New Zealand’s bowling, striking 10 boundaries and four sixes before being run out off the final delivery.

Her innings accounted for more than half of Australia’s total and proved decisive on a night when most of the other batters struggled to accelerate.

Jess Kerr and Nensi Patel picked up two wickets each for New Zealand.

Chasing 168, New Zealand never established the momentum required to challenge Australia’s total.

Georgia Plimmer fell for six before debutant Flora Devonshire contributed 12, leaving the visitors at 36/2 in the seventh over.

Captain Melie Kerr (32 off 38) and Maddy Green (26 off 22) attempted to rebuild with a 41-run partnership, but their inability to accelerate increased the pressure.

Gardner removed Kerr in the 14th over, and Green's run-out shortly afterwards left New Zealand struggling at 89/4.

Wareham then dismantled the lower order, finishing with outstanding figures of 3/18 from four overs.

Polly Inglis provided late resistance with a brisk 19 off 10 balls, but New Zealand finished 40 runs short.

Gardner was named Player of the Match as Australia secured the series with one game remaining.
