Brisbane, 9 October 2026: Annabel Sutherland’s four-wicket haul and a commanding half-century from Phoebe Litchfield helped Australia Women secure a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh Women in the opening One-Day International at Allan Border Field on Friday.

Sutherland returned impressive figures of 4-30 before Litchfield struck a fluent 77 off 57 deliveries as Australia chased down a modest target of 167 in just 25.4 overs, finishing on 168-3 with 146 balls to spare.

The result gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series, which forms part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2025–29, the qualification pathway for the 2029 Women’s Cricket World Cup.

Electing to field first, Australia immediately put Bangladesh under pressure as experienced seamer Megan Schutt removed Fargana Hoque with the opening delivery of the match.

Schutt struck again in the third over to dismiss Sarmin Sultana, leaving the visitors struggling at 11-2.

Sutherland then removed Sharmin Akhter for 24 and Sobhana Mostary for two, reducing Bangladesh to 48-4 inside 14 overs.

Captain Nigar Sultana attempted to rebuild the innings with a patient 29 off 86 balls, while Shorna Akter contributed 21. However, neither could substantially accelerate the scoring against Australia's disciplined attack.

Ritu Moni provided Bangladesh's strongest resistance, scoring 45 off 63 deliveries, including five boundaries. Her effort, alongside Nahida Akter's unbeaten 19, helped the visitors reach 166 before being dismissed in 49.4 overs.

Schutt complemented Sutherland’s four wickets with remarkable economy, conceding just 19 runs from her 10 overs, including four maidens.

Australia's response was emphatic despite losing Georgia Voll for 19 with the score on 30.

Litchfield took control of the chase, reaching her half-century off just 35 deliveries and striking 10 fours and a six during an aggressive innings that ensured Bangladesh had little opportunity to apply sustained pressure.

Her dismissal for 77 left Australia at 119-2 in the 17th over, but Ellyse Perry maintained control of the chase.

Beth Mooney contributed 13 before falling to ODI debutant Habiba Islam, who finished with 2-36.

Sutherland then joined Perry to complete the victory, remaining unbeaten on 25 off 23 balls, while Perry finished on 26 not out. Sutherland was named Player of the Match for her all-round contribution.

The second ODI will take place on Sunday, October 11, at Allan Border Field in Brisbane, with the third and final match scheduled for October 14 at the same venue.
